EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Lady Drogheda, the Countess of Drogheda, née Kathleen Moore Pelham Burn, in the midst of preparations for an extraordinary exhibition at the Grosvenor Galleries in 1917. Lady Drogheda, a remarkable woman of her time, was known for her passion for sports, particularly tennis at Wimbledon, and her pioneering spirit that led her to learn to fly. Having divorced her first husband, the 10th Earl of Drogheda, she married Guillemo Delanda, a polo player. Amid the tumult of the First World War, Lady Drogheda's humanitarian spirit shone through as she worked tirelessly to help refugees. In a bold move to raise funds for charity and encourage men to join the Royal Flying Corps (later known as the RAF), she arranged an aircraft exhibition. The photograph shows her meticulously adjusting the position of a German aeroplane lent to her by the War Office. The exhibition was a resounding success, with the public intrigued by the sight of women handling aircraft and the prospect of joining the war effort. This evocative image offers a glimpse into the extraordinary life of Lady Drogheda, a trailblazing figure in the annals of women's history during the Great War.
