EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures Lady Furness, formerly Ada Daisy Hogg, in her nursing uniform from 1917. At the time, she was the first wife of Marmaduke Furness, 1st Viscount Furness, and played an extraordinary role in providing care and support for wounded officers during World War I. Lady Furness's dedication to the war effort was exemplified by her establishment and equipment of a hospital in Harrogate, close to her family home, Nidd Hall. Named after her late husband, Lord Furness, the hospital boasted 206 beds and Lady Furness took an active part in its administration. Her selfless actions were a testament to the courage and resilience of women during this tumultuous period in history. Tragically, Lady Furness passed away in 1921 aboard the Furness boat, Sapphire, and was buried at sea. This poignant image serves as a reminder of her unwavering commitment to nursing and her significant contribution to the welfare of wounded soldiers during the Great War. As a member of the aristocracy and peerage, Lady Furness's story is an intriguing chapter in the history of society and nursing during this time. This portrait, with its authentic nursing uniform and the solemn expression on Lady Furness's face, offers a glimpse into the sacrifices and dedication of women like her who answered the call to serve during the darkest days of World War I.
