He was a strong supporter of the French Revolution and was elected to the National Assembly in 1791. However, he was later imprisoned during the Reign of Terror and was only released after the fall of Robespierre in 1794. Lafayette later served as a deputy in the French Chamber of Deputies and was a vocal opponent of Napoleon Bonaparte. He died in Paris in 1834, at the age of 76.
