However, his allegiance shifted during the Revolution, and he became a key figure in the Directory government, serving as Minister of the Navy and Minister of the Interior. Lally-Tolendal's tenure in the Directory was marked by significant reforms, including the abolition of feudalism and the establishment of the metric system. He also played a crucial role in the negotiations that led to the Treaty of Campo Formio with Austria, which secured French territorial gains and marked a turning point in French foreign policy. Despite his contributions to the new French government, Lally-Tolendal's political fortunes waned in the late 1790s, and he was eventually exiled from France. He spent the remainder of his life in Italy, where he continued to write and publish works on political theory and history.
