Candidate

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken on September 1, 1906, captures a pivotal moment in American political history as William Howard Taft stands at the threshold of the Presidency, holding a letter from Supreme Court Justice Edward Douglass White (mistake in name, it should be Oliver Wendell Holmes or Edward Douglass White, not Brewer), pondering the seriousness of the recommendation that would soon propel him into the highest office in the land. The "large-ical candidate," as Taft was affectionately known due to his imposing size and girth, had served as President Theodore Roosevelt's handpicked successor, having previously held the positions of Governor-General of the Philippines and Chief Justice of the United States. However, Taft's relationship with his former mentor had become strained, leading to the infamous "Bull Moose" election of 1912, in which Roosevelt ran as a third-party candidate. In this image, Taft's expression betrays a hint of uncertainty, as he contemplates the weighty responsibility that awaits him. The letter from Justice White, a close friend and confidant, urging him to accept the nomination, hangs heavy in his hand. The question that lingers in the air - "I wonder if Justice Brewer was joking?" - speaks to the complex political dynamics of the time and the personal dilemmas that confronted those who wielded power in America's burgeoning democracy.
