EDITORS COMMENTS
Late Riders in the Row: A Peaceful Stroll through Hyde Park in 1898 This photograph, taken in 1898, captures the tranquil scene of a sedate couple making their way along Rotten Row in London's Hyde Park. The term 'Rotten Row' originated from the 17th century when the road was lined with elm trees, and the ground beneath was often littered with fallen fruit and rotting leaves. However, by the late 19th century, the name had evolved to signify the fashionable promenade for the city's elite. The couple, dressed in their Sunday best, are leisurely riding their horses, their faces reflecting a sense of contentment and relaxation. The woman, wearing a high-collared dress and a large hat, holds the reins with one hand while her companion, dressed in a waistcoat and bowler hat, steers their horse with ease. The gentle pace of their journey is in stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the city, offering a moment of respite from the daily grind. Surrounding the couple are other horse-drawn carriages and riders, all making their way along the tree-lined avenue. The horses, too, seem to share in the calm atmosphere, their ears pricked forward as they amble along. The sun casts a warm glow over the scene, bathing the park in a golden light. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when a leisurely horse ride through Hyde Park was a cherished pastime for London's upper class. The serene image stands as a testament to the enduring allure of nature and the simple pleasures of a quiet stroll, even in the heart of a bustling city.
