EDITORS COMMENTS
This illustration, published in the Illustrated London News on January 21, 1899, commemorates the historic launch of the RMS Oceanic. Built by Harland and Wolff in Belfast for the prestigious White Star Line, this magnificent vessel measured an impressive 704 feet in length, making it the longest ship in service at the time. The Oceanic was designed primarily for the Liverpool to New York passenger service, setting sail on her maiden voyage in July of the same year. The launch event was a grand spectacle, with thousands gathering to witness the momentous occasion. As the bottle of champagne smashed against the hull, releasing a cascade of sparkling liquid, the Oceanic began her journey from the water, gliding effortlessly into the Irish Sea. The pride and excitement of the builders, White Star Line executives, and the local community were palpable as they watched the vessel take her first steps towards a new era of maritime travel. Sadly, the Oceanic's story did not end on a positive note. In 1914, during World War I, she was converted into an armed merchant cruiser and was wrecked off the Shetland Isles. Despite her tragic end, the launch of the Oceanic remains an important chapter in maritime history, showcasing the engineering prowess and ambition of the late 19th century.
