Americas Ceremony Commissioned Gosport Hampshire Launched Lipton Naming Shaftesbury Shamrock

EDITORS COMMENTS
In the picturesque town of Gosport, Hampshire, on the south coast of England, the much-anticipated launch of Sir Thomas Lipton's latest yacht, Shamrock V, took place on the crisp morning of April 14, 1930. The Shamrock V was a proud addition to Sir Thomas Lipton's fleet, commissioned specifically for the defense of the America's Cup, the most prestigious trophy in international yacht racing. Sir Thomas Lipton, an Irish-born businessman and philanthropist, had a long-standing ambition to bring the America's Cup back to Europe. Having previously contested the cup with the Shamrock I, II, and III, he was determined to make Shamrock V his best chance yet. The yacht was designed by the renowned naval architect, G.L. Watson, and was built at the Camper & Nicholsons yard in Gosport. The launch ceremony was graced by the presence of Lady Shaftesbury, who performed the honors by officially naming the vessel. Surrounded by a large crowd of onlookers, the Shamrock V was gently eased into the water, marking the beginning of her journey towards the America's Cup trials. The launch of Shamrock V was a significant moment in the history of yachting and the America's Cup. This iconic image captures the excitement and anticipation of the day, as the yacht glides effortlessly into the Solent, ready to take on the world's best sailors and challenge for the coveted trophy.
