Brothers Carolina Devil Hawk Kill Kitty Launching Orville Slope Track Wilbur Wright

EDITORS COMMENTS
This historic photograph captures the moment of the Wright Brothers' groundbreaking achievement at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on December 14, 1903. The image shows the launching track on Big Hill, with the north slope of Kill Devil Hill in the background. Orville Wright (left) and Wilbur Wright (right) are seen in the foreground, preparing for the first powered, controlled, and sustained flight of a heavier-than-air aircraft. The Wright Brothers had spent years researching and experimenting with various designs, and this particular location offered the ideal conditions for their tests. The long, level expanse of Big Hill provided the necessary space for the launching track, while the gentle slope of Kill Devil Hill allowed for the necessary wind conditions. In this photograph, the brothers are seen with their Flyer, a biplane with a wingspan of 12.3 meters (40 feet) and a length of 6.7 meters (22 feet). The Flyer was powered by a 12 horsepower engine and was designed to lift its two occupants off the ground and sustain level flight. The launching process involved the brothers running alongside the Flyer, pushing it down the track to build up enough speed for takeoff. Once they reached the end of the track, they would jump on board and release the brakes, allowing the Flyer to glide into the air. This photograph is a testament to the ingenuity, determination, and perseverance of the Wright Brothers, who forever changed the course of human history with their invention of the airplane.
