EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: "Levi Woodbury: A Pioneering American Jurist" Levi Woodbury (1789-1851), an esteemed figure in American legal history, is depicted in this vintage photograph. Born on October 24, 1789, in New Hampshire, Woodbury would go on to make significant contributions to the legal and political landscape of the United States. Woodbury's legal career began in earnest after his admission to the New Hampshire bar in 1812. He quickly gained a reputation for his sharp intellect and unwavering commitment to justice. In 1823, President James Monroe appointed Woodbury as the Attorney General of New Hampshire, a position he held for six years. In 1829, Woodbury was appointed to the New Hampshire Supreme Court, where he served until 1833. In 1833, President Andrew Jackson nominated Woodbury to the United States Supreme Court, making him the first justice from New Hampshire. During his tenure on the Court, Woodbury played a pivotal role in several landmark cases, including Dred Scott v. Sandford, which dealt with the issue of slavery and its expansion into new territories. Despite his strong stance against slavery, Woodbury's vote in the Dred Scott case was the deciding factor in its ruling, which ultimately upheld the Fugitive Slave Act and dealt a significant blow to the abolitionist movement. This decision, however, did not diminish Woodbury's reputation as a fair and impartial jurist. Woodbury's contributions to American jurisprudence extended beyond the Supreme Court. In 1850, he was appointed by President Millard Fillmore as the Secretary of the Navy, a position he held until his death on December 12, 1851. This photograph, bearing the autograph of Levi Woodbury, is a testament to the remarkable life and career of an American jurist who left an indelible mark on the legal and political history of the United States.
