1858 Battles Doyly Historica Lieutenant Slush Snowball Stamp

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the stern yet resolute gaze of Lieutenant-General Sir Thomas D'Oyly Snow (1858-1940), a prominent British military leader during the First World War. Nicknamed 'Slush' and 'Snowball' due to his icy demeanor and snowy-white hair, Sir Thomas led his troops through some of the most significant battles on the Western Front. Born on March 2, 1858, in County Cork, Ireland, Sir Thomas joined the British Army in 1877 and rose through the ranks, demonstrating exceptional leadership and strategic acumen. He first saw action during the Second Anglo-Afghan War and later served in the Sudan Campaign. During the First World War, Sir Thomas commanded the 17th (Northern) Division, which saw action at the Battle of Loos in 1915. He was later appointed to command the 3rd Army Corps, leading them through the Battle of Arras in 1917 and the Battle of Cambrai in 1917. Despite setbacks and heavy casualties, Sir Thomas's leadership and determination proved instrumental in the eventual Allied victory. After the war, Sir Thomas was knighted for his service and continued to serve in various military roles until his retirement in 1922. He passed away on March 18, 1940. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of Sir Thomas D'Oyly Snow's significant contributions to British military history and his indomitable spirit during the First World War.
