EDITORS COMMENTS
This striking photograph captures the noble and resolute visage of Lieutenant Geoffrey Harold Woolley VC OBE MC, the first Territorial Army officer to be bestowed with the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. Born in 1892, Woolley joined the Army Service Corps in 1911 as a trooper and later transferred to the Royal Fusiliers in 1913. During the First World War, he distinguished himself in numerous engagements, including the Battle of the Somme and the Battle of Arras. On August 21, 1918, during the Battle of Amiens, Woolley's company was pinned down by heavy enemy fire. Disregarding his own safety, he single-handedly attacked the German machine gun post that was causing the most damage, killing the gun crew and putting an end to their devastating barrage. For his extraordinary bravery and selflessness, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. After the war, Woolley continued his military career, rising to the rank of lieutenant. He was later awarded the Military Cross and the Order of the British Empire. Woolley passed away in 1968, leaving behind a legacy of courage and heroism. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made by brave men like Woolley during times of war and the importance of recognizing their valor through prestigious awards like the Victoria Cross.
