EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the bravery and determination of Lieutenant Colonel John Forbes-Robertson during the Battle of the Somme in 1918. On the fateful day of June 15th, Forbes-Robertson played a pivotal role in saving the Western Front's defence line from certain collapse. Amidst intense machine gun and close range shell fire, he made a daring reconnaissance ride on horseback, fully visible to the enemy. Tragically, his horse was shot from under him, but Forbes-Robertson refused to be deterred. He continued on horseback, undeterred by the hail of bullets and shells. Later in the day, the left flank of the defence line began to waver. Forbes-Robertson once again sprang into action, riding out to assess the situation and rally his troops. His quick thinking and courageous actions helped to steady the line and prevent a catastrophic defeat. This powerful photograph, taken by renowned war artist Fortunino Matania, is a testament to Forbes-Robertson's heroism and the indomitable spirit of the soldiers who fought in the trenches during World War I. The date of this historic event is etched in the annals of military history, as Forbes-Robertson became one of the few recipients of the prestigious Victoria Cross for his actions that day.
