EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Lieutenant Mike Rimington, a distinguished soldier and horse trainer of the 37th Lancers, is seen taming unruly and vicious horses for the British Army at the Underdale Hall Remount Department near Shrewsbury during World War I. The horses in this image, each with their unique and challenging histories, include Savage Simon, a horse described by the War Office as "vicious and quite unmanageable," who had injured six men, some severely, and had savaged a rider, tearing the saddle to pieces. In the top right corner, Rimington is shown teaching Bucking Belle, a horse previously known for her viciousness in the stable, to refrain from striking men. In the bottom right corner, Rimington is seen standing on Winston Churchill, a horse labeled as "quite unmanageable," "very wild in the stable," and "dangerous rearer." The middle photograph depicts Rimington sitting on Cunning Cuss, a horse that was "extremely nervous to approach in the stall," "fed from other stalls," "rears up and strikes if anyone attempts to bridle him," "refuses and bucks when leaving the stable," and had proven vicious on several occasions. Rimington, the nephew of General Rimington of Rimington Guides fame, had himself gone through the Boer War, where he was seriously injured. This photograph captures a moment in history, showcasing Rimington's remarkable ability to transform even the most unruly and dangerous horses into obedient companions for the British Army.
