1857 Lilian Norton Opera Plump Singer Artists Nordica

EDITORS COMMENTS
Lilian Nordica, an American opera singer of extraordinary talent and charisma, is captured in this beautiful photographic portrait taken during the height of her illustrious career. Born as Lilian Norton on February 3, 1857, in Lynn, Massachusetts, she later adopted the stage name Nordica, which would become synonymous with her powerful and emotive voice. Nordica's journey into the world of opera began in her late twenties when she attended a performance of "La Boheme" in Boston. The experience was transformative, and she soon enrolled in voice lessons, determined to make a career in opera. Her hard work paid off, and she made her debut in 1888 in the title role of "Carmen" in New York City. This image of Nordica showcases her plump figure and the expressive intensity that defined her performances. Her unique voice and dramatic presence earned her critical acclaim and a loyal following. Nordica's repertoire included some of the most demanding roles in opera, such as "Aida," "Tosca," and "Fidelio." She performed in major opera houses across Europe and the United States, earning accolades from audiences and critics alike. Despite her success, Nordica's personal life was marked by tragedy. She was married three times and had two children, both of whom died young. Her third husband, the renowned tenor Enrico Caruso, passed away just a few months after their wedding in 1921. Nordica continued to perform until her retirement in 1913. She died on January 27, 1914, in New York City, leaving behind a legacy as one of the most beloved and influential opera singers of her time.
