Academy Caves Propaganda Shun Sino

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a group of dedicated students from the Lo-Shun Art Academy, located in a series of caves nestled in the Chinese countryside during the tumultuous period of 1937-1945. The Academy, renowned for its Drama, Music, and Painting departments, offered intensive six-month courses that prepared its students for a unique and significant role in Chinese history. The students in this image are from the Drawing department, their focused expressions and earnest demeanor reflecting their commitment to their craft. However, their education extended far beyond the confines of the Academy. After the first three months of rigorous training, these students were sent to the front lines to spread propaganda amongst the Chinese soldiers, bolstering morale and inspiring resistance against the invading Japanese forces. Upon their return to the Academy for the final three months of their course, the students would continue their artistic training, integrating their experiences into their work and deepening their understanding of the power of art as a tool for social and political change. This photograph is a poignant reminder of the resilience and creativity of the Lo-Shun Art Academy students, who used their artistic talents to make a difference during a time of great turmoil and uncertainty.
