This print depicts Lodewijk Grave Nassau (1538-1574), a Dutch soldier and statesman, who served as the Governor of Drenthe and Groningen in the Netherlands. Born as the younger brother of Hendrik III, Prince of Orange, Lodewijk's military career began at an early age, and he quickly gained a reputation as a brave and capable soldier. During the Dutch Revolt against Spanish rule, Lodewijk played a significant role in the defense of the Netherlands. In 1568, he led a successful campaign against the Spanish forces in the Battle of Heiligerlee, which marked a turning point in the war. However, Lodewijk's military successes were not limited to the battlefield. He also proved to be an astute diplomat and statesman, negotiating alliances and treaties with various European powers. Despite his military and political accomplishments, Lodewijk's life was cut short when he was assassinated in 1574. The circumstances of his death remain unclear, but it is believed that he was killed by Spanish agents in retaliation for his role in the Dutch Revolt.
