Longfellow is best known for his epic poem "Hiawatha," which brought Native American mythology to a wider audience, as well as numerous other poems, short stories, and translations. Born in Portland, Maine, Longfellow was educated at Bowdoin College and later at the École des Hautes Études in Paris. These losses deeply affected him, and some of his most moving poems were written in response to these losses.
