Capture Captured Cornwallis Independence Marquis Revolution Revolutionary

EDITORS COMMENTS
Lord Charles Cornwallis, Marquis of Cornwallis (1738-1805), was a British military leader who played a significant role in the American Revolutionary War. In this striking image, taken in 1781, Cornwallis is shown in the moment of his surrender at Yorktown, Virginia. The defeat at Yorktown is considered a turning point in the war, as it effectively ended major British military operations in the southern colonies. Cornwallis, a highly respected and experienced soldier, had led the British forces in the southern theater of the war since 1776. He had achieved several victories against the American rebels, including the Battle of Camden in 1780. However, his luck ran out at Yorktown, where he was besieged by a combined French and American army led by Generals George Washington and Rochambeau. The siege lasted from September 28 to October 19, 1781. Cornwallis, believing that he had enough supplies to hold out until relief arrived, refused several offers of surrender. However, when it became clear that relief was not coming, he was forced to negotiate. On October 17, 1781, Cornwallis signed the articles of surrender, effectively ending the war in the southern colonies. This print, taken from an original painting by an unknown artist, captures the moment of Cornwallis's surrender. The defeated general is shown with a resigned expression, surrounded by his officers and American and French soldiers. The print serves as a reminder of the pivotal role that Cornwallis played in the American Revolution and the significance of his surrender at Yorktown.
