Louis-Henri Obin: The Imperial Majesty of Nicephore in Le Juif Errant This handcoloured lithograph, created by Alexandre Lacauchie for Galerie Dramatique: Costumes des Theatres de Paris around 1860, showcases the renowned French lyric bass singer, Louis-Henri Obin, in the regal role of Nicephore, Emperor of the Orient, from the opera Le Juif Errant. Born on March 1, 1820, in Paris, Obin's impressive vocal abilities and commanding stage presence quickly propelled him to fame. He made his debut at the Opéra-Comique in 1843, and his rich, resonant voice soon captured the attention of audiences and critics alike. Obin's repertoire spanned various genres, from opera to oratorio, and he was particularly celebrated for his portrayals of powerful and regal characters. In Le Juif Errant, a grand opera in five acts composed by Fromental Halévy, Obin embodied the enigmatic and imposing figure of Nicephore, Emperor of the Orient. The opera, which premiered in 1834, is based on the historical novel Le Juif Errant by Eugène Scribe and Méhul. The story revolves around the titular Jewish wanderer, who, after being falsely accused of a crime, embarks on a journey to clear his name and seek vengeance.
