EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning oval portrait captures the regal presence of King Louis XIV of France, also known as Louis the Great or Louis the Fourteen, who ruled from 1638 until his death in 1715. Born in 1638, Louis was the third son of King Louis XIII and Anne of Austria. At the age of five, he ascended to the throne following the death of his father, making him the longest reigning monarch in the history of France and Europe. Louis XIV is depicted here in a profile view, wearing a laurel wreath and a suit of armor adorned with the sun symbol, which became synonymous with his reign. The quatorze (French for fourteen) in the title refers to his birth order in the royal family. The portrait exudes an aura of power, authority, and grandeur, reflecting Louis's reputation as an exceptional leader and ruler. During his reign, Louis XIV transformed France into a centralized, absolute monarchy, moving the seat of power from Paris to the Palace of Versailles. He oversaw significant cultural and artistic achievements, including the patronage of renowned artists such as Le Brun, Lully, and Molière. This evocative portrait, dating from around 1680, offers a glimpse into the majesty and power of one of the most influential monarchs in European history. The intricate details of the armor, the regal bearing of the king, and the symbolism of the laurel wreath and sun all combine to create an enduring image of Louis XIV as a great and resolute ruler.
