EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the traditional Scottish clan costume of Mac Donald of the Isles, showcasing the rich history and heritage of the Highland clans. Dating back to the early 20th century, this image is taken from "The Highland Clans of Scotland Vol. 1," published in 1923 by Mary Evans Picture Library. The MacDonald of the Isles, also known as Clan Ranald, is one of the oldest and most distinguished clans in Scotland, with origins tracing back to the 13th century. The clan's tartan, which is depicted in the photograph, features a striking pattern of horizontal and vertical lines in shades of green, blue, and black. The man in the photograph wears the full traditional MacDonald of the Isles regalia, including a kilt made of the clan tartan, a plaid or "feileadh mór" draped over the shoulders, a sporran, a belt or "belted plaid," and a pair of ghillie brogues. The plaid is folded and pinned at the shoulder, a style known as the "Balmoral" or "Royal" fold, which became popular in the late 19th century. The MacDonald of the Isles crest, featuring a stag's head, is emblazoned on the man's bonnet or "balmoral bonnet," which is also adorned with a feather. The man's arms are bare, showing off his muscular build and strong, capable hands. The overall effect is one of strength, pride, and connection to the land and history of the Scottish Highlands. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, providing a tangible link to the rich cultural traditions and heritage of the Scottish Highland clans, including the MacDonald of the Isles. It serves as a reminder of the enduring power of tradition and the importance of preserving the past for future generations.
