Madeira - Transporting Hammock
Amongst the three best-known unusual means of transportation to have be found on the Portuguese Island of Madeira was the transporting hammock. Here, a length of cloth resembling a hammock was slung between two, long wooden poles. Two men, one at the fore and one to the back, would lift the contrivance in a mode rather akin to that of a sedan chair. The passenger reclining in the hammock, usually a woman, was thus transported in what must have been a rather uncomfortable fashion!! Date: circa 1910s

1. Title: "A Unique Ride: The Transporting Hammock of Madeira, 1910s" In the enchanting Portuguese island of Madeira, three distinctive means of transportation have left an indelible mark on history. Among these quirky conveyances, the transporting hammock stands out as a testament to the island's rich cultural heritage. This photograph, taken circa 1910s, showcases the unusual transporting hammock in action. The hammock, resembling a lengthy piece of cloth, is skillfully suspended between two long wooden poles. Two robust porters, one at the fore and one at the rear, employ a lifting technique reminiscent of a sedan chair. The passenger, typically a woman, reclines in the hammock, seemingly enjoying the ride, albeit in an undeniably uncomfortable fashion. This unconventional transporting method, which can be likened to a human sling, was a common sight on the hilly terrain of Madeira. The island's steep inclines and narrow streets necessitated the invention of such innovative transportation solutions. The transporting hammock offered a unique and personalized experience, allowing passengers to traverse the island's rugged landscape in style. The intricate canopy above the hammock shielded passengers from the elements, providing a degree of comfort and privacy. The transporting hammock, with its wooden poles and traditional design, is an enduring symbol of Madeira's history and the resourcefulness of its people. This photograph offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era when such unusual means of transportation were the norm.
