Baroda Consort Maharaja Princesses Behar Cooch Maharani

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures Indira Raje of Baroda, later known as the Maharani of Cooch Behar, during a pivotal moment in her extraordinary life. Born on 19 February 1892, Indira was a princess in her own right, the daughter of the Gaekwad of Baroda. However, she defied her father's wishes and married Maharaja Jitendra Narayan of Cooch Behar in 1911. Their union was significant as it brought the two powerful princely states closer, strengthening their political ties. At the time of this photograph, taken in 1914, Indira's father had offered his "all" to King George V at the commencement of World War I. Indira, along with her husband Jitendra, spent a significant portion of her life in Europe. The Maharani's elegant appearance and regal bearing are evident in this portrait, which was published in The Tatler. Her sari, adorned with intricate gold embroidery and a stunning diamond necklace, adds to her resplendent appearance. Indira's life was marked by defiance, love, and political alliances. She served as regent of Cooch Behar during her son's minority and continued to play an influential role in Indian society long after her husband's passing. This image is a testament to her unique position in history as a princess, consort, and regent, and a reminder of the rich and complex world of Indian royalty during the early 20th century.
