1635 1719 Aubigne Francoise Laure Madame Maintenon Scarron Secret Widow

EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait captures the enigmatic figure of Madame de Maintenon, born Francoise d'Aubigne, in the latter years of her life. The image, dated around 1690, depicts the widow of poet Paul Scarron and the secret second wife of King Louis XIV of France. Born in 1635, Madame de Maintenon's early life was marked by adversity, as she was abandoned by her parents and raised in a convent. However, her resilience and intelligence soon came to the attention of influential figures, and she was eventually introduced to the court of Louis XIV. It was there that she caught the king's eye, and in 1670, they secretly married in a small ceremony at the Palace of Saint-Cloud. Their marriage was kept a closely guarded secret, as Louis XIV was already married to Marie-Thérèse of Austria, and the union was not recognized by the Church or the public until many years later. Madame de Maintenon played a significant role in the king's later years, acting as his confidante, advisor, and the influential force behind the establishment of the Royal Orphanage at Saint-Cyr. Despite the clandestine nature of their marriage, Madame de Maintenon's influence at the French court was undeniable. She was a devout woman, known for her piety and her dedication to the education and welfare of children. In this portrait, she is depicted in the simple yet elegant attire of a noblewoman, her expression one of quiet strength and determination. The intricate lace collar and cuffs add a touch of opulence to the otherwise understated ensemble, reflecting her status as a woman of power and influence at the French court. Madame de Maintenon passed away in 1719, leaving behind a complex and fascinating legacy. This portrait serves as a reminder of her enduring impact on French history, and the intrigue and mystery that surrounded her life at the Sun King's court.
