EDITORS COMMENTS
The Maiwand Lion in Forbury Gardens, Reading, Berkshire, is a poignant and historic memorial dedicated to the 329 men of the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment of Foot who lost their lives during the Second Anglo-Afghan War in Afghanistan between 1878 and 1880. The Battle of Maiwand, fought on July 27, 1880, was a significant engagement in the conflict, with the British forces suffering heavy casualties. This bronze statue, sometimes referred to locally as the Forbury Lion, was erected in 1884 to honor the fallen soldiers. It was the work of renowned sculptor George Blackall Simonds and Alan Greeley, who expertly crafted the lion in a fearless and majestic pose, symbolizing the bravery and resilience of the soldiers. The lion stands atop a granite plinth, with intricate carvings of the regimental crest and the inscription, "In memory of the officers and men of the 66th (Berkshire) Regiment of Foot who fell in the Battle of Maiwand, July 27, 1880." The Maiwand Lion has stood proudly in Forbury Gardens for over a century, serving as a cherished landmark and a reminder of the sacrifices made by the soldiers during the campaign in Afghanistan. The statue continues to attract visitors from near and far, who come to pay their respects and appreciate the historical significance of this powerful and moving tribute.
