EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Margaret Wintringham, a trailblazing British Liberal Party politician, as she made history by taking her seat in the House of Commons in 1922. Born in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, in 1879, Wintringham became the second woman and the first British-born woman to be elected as a Member of Parliament (MP), following in the footsteps of Constance Markievicz, who represented Sinn Féin. Wintringham's election in Louth came during a pivotal moment in political history, as the country was recovering from the First World War and women's suffrage had only recently been granted. Wintringham's election was a testament to her dedication and determination, as she had previously run unsuccessfully in several elections before finally securing her seat. During her time in Parliament, she advocated for women's rights, education, and social welfare. Her tenure was short-lived, however, as she lost her seat in the 1924 general election. Despite this setback, Wintringham continued to be an influential figure in British politics, serving as a county councillor and working tirelessly for various causes. This photograph, taken during her time in Parliament, is a powerful reminder of her groundbreaking achievement and the significant role she played in shaping the political landscape of the 1920s. The image of Wintringham, dressed in her parliamentary attire and seated at her desk, exudes a sense of confidence and determination that continues to inspire women in politics today.
