EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photograph, Marie Jose Charlotte Sophie Amelie Henriette Gabrielle, also known as Marie Jose of Belgium, gracefully poses as the Princess of Piedmont following her marriage to Umberto, the Crown Prince of Italy, in 1930. The image, taken during a time when Marie Jose was only 24 years old, showcases her timeless elegance and beauty. Marie Jose, born on January 4, 1906, in Spa, Belgium, was the last Queen Consort of Italy. Her brief 35-day tenure as queen, which earned her the nickname "The May Queen," began on May 9, 1946, when she married Umberto at the Royal Palace of Brussels. However, the union was short-lived as Umberto was overthrown in a constitutional referendum just over a month later, on June 13, 1946, and the couple was forced to flee Italy. In this photograph, Marie Jose is dressed in a stunning fur coat, pearls, and a silk headscarf, exuding an air of sophistication and elegance. The image captures a moment in time when the young princess was on the cusp of becoming a queen, a role that was taken away from her just as quickly as it had been granted. Despite the brevity of her reign, Marie Jose's legacy as the last Queen of Italy continues to be a significant part of both Belgian and Italian royal history. Marie Jose's life was marked by many twists and turns, including a second marriage to Prince Aimone of Savoy, and a long exile in Portugal, where she lived until her death on January 27, 2001. This photograph, however, captures a moment of hope and promise, a moment when the world was eager to see what the future held for the young Belgian princess as she embarked on her new role as the Princess of Piedmont.
