Maria Manuela of Portugal (1527-1545): A Portrait of Royal Beauty and Political Complexity This exquisite colored engraving captures the enchanting likeness of Maria Manuela of Portugal (1527-1545), the eldest daughter of King John III of Portugal and his wife Catherine of Austria. The image portrays Maria Manuela during her time as Princess of Asturias, having married Philip, Prince of Asturias, the future Philip II of Spain, in 1543. Prior to her marriage, she held the title of Princess of Portugal in her own right (1527-1535). The House of Aviz, to which Maria Manuela belonged, was a significant Portuguese royal dynasty that ruled Portugal from 1385 to 1580. Her father, King John III, was a crucial figure during the union of the crowns of Portugal and Castile, which took place in 1580. This union marked the beginning of the Spanish rule over Portugal, a period that lasted until 1640. Maria Manuela's marriage to Philip of Asturias was a strategic alliance aimed at strengthening the relationship between Portugal and Spain. The union, however, was short-lived as Maria Manuela passed away in 1545 at the young age of 18, just two years after her marriage. The intricate details of this 16th-century colored engraving highlight Maria Manuela's striking features, elegance, and regal bearing. Her attire, adorned with rich fabrics and precious jewels, reflects the opulence and grandeur of the Habsburg court. This portrait offers a glimpse into the life of a princess whose story is deeply intertwined with the history of Portugal and Spain.
