This exquisite 13th century oil painting depicts Maria de Molina (1265-1321), the Queen of Castile, in the interior of the Convent of Las Huelgas Reales in Valladolid, Spain. Maria, the daughter of Alfonso de Molina, was the wife of Sancho IV (1258-1295), the King of Castile and León, from 1284 until his death in 1295. In this image, Maria is shown in regal attire, seated among the nuns of the convent, surrounded by an atmosphere of piety and devotion.
