EDITORS COMMENTS
Matilda of Tuscany, born in 1046, was a powerful and influential figure in the political landscape of Europe during the 11th and 12th centuries. This stunning handcolored illustration, drawn and lithographed by Paul Mercuri with text by Camille Bonnard from the 1860 publication "Historical Costumes from the 12th to 15th Centuries," provides a captivating glimpse into the regal attire and stately presence of this remarkable woman. Matilda is depicted here in the prime of her life, seated on a throne adorned with rich fabrics and ornate decorations. She wears a conical hat, bedecked with precious gemstones, atop her head, and a pink veil draped over her shoulders. A red chlamys, or cloak, is worn over a blue robe, the edges of which are trimmed with gold and tied at the left shoulder. A luxurious cushion and footrest complete the regal setting. This illustration is based on a manuscript of "Vita Matildis," a biography of Matilda of Tuscany, and offers a fascinating insight into the fashion and style of the time. Matilda's elegant and sophisticated appearance reflects her status as a powerful ruler and a patron of the arts, as well as her deep commitment to her family and her people. Matilda's life was marked by numerous challenges and triumphs. She played a key role in the Investiture Controversy, a power struggle between the papacy and the Holy Roman Empire, and was instrumental in securing the succession of her son, Welf V, as the Margrave of Tuscany. Her legacy as a shrewd and effective ruler continues to be celebrated in European history, and this beautiful illustration serves as a testament to her enduring influence and importance.
