Archbishop Cardinal Emanuel Maurice Monreale Savoy Sicily

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking 17th-century portrait, Maurice Emanuel Savoy (1593-1626) is depicted as a powerful and esteemed figure, both as a Duke of Savoy and as the Cardinal-Archbishop of Monreale in Sicily. Savoy's grand attire reflects his dual roles - he wears the red robes and hat of a cardinal, signifying his high-ranking position within the Catholic Church, while the blue sash and gold decorations represent his ducal title. Born in Turin, Italy, Savoy was the son of Charles Emmanuel I, Duke of Savoy, and Catherine of Austria. In 1615, he was appointed as the Archbishop of Monreale by Pope Paul V. This appointment came with the added title of Cardinal, making Savoy one of the youngest cardinals in history at the time. The following year, Savoy was ordained as a priest and consecrated as a bishop. He served as the Archbishop of Monreale until his untimely death in 1626, at the age of just 33. During his brief tenure, Savoy worked to improve the living conditions of the people of Monreale and to strengthen the ties between Sicily and the Savoy family. This portrait, which dates from the 17th century, offers a glimpse into the opulence and grandeur of the European aristocracy during this period. The intricate details of Savoy's clothing, the rich colors and textures, and the ornate background all serve to highlight his status and importance. The portrait also provides a window into the complex web of political alliances and religious affiliations that shaped the European world during the early modern period. Overall, this image of Maurice Emanuel Savoy is a testament to the power and influence of the Savoy family, as well as the broader historical context of the 17th century. It is a reminder of the complex interplay between religion, politics, and personal ambition that characterized this era, and the enduring legacy of the individuals who shaped it.
