EDITORS COMMENTS
Max von Laue: A Pioneer in Crystallography and X-Ray Diffraction (1879-1960) Max von Laue, born on January 9, 1879, in Pfaffenhofen an der Ilm, Germany, was a renowned physicist whose groundbreaking discoveries in the field of crystallography and X-ray diffraction earned him the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1914. In this photograph, Max von Laue is seen in a thoughtful pose, deep in contemplation, reflecting on the revolutionary discoveries he made in the early 20th century. Von Laue is best known for his work on the diffraction of X-rays by crystals, a discovery that fundamentally changed our understanding of the atomic structure of matter. Before von Laue's experiments, it was believed that X-rays could only penetrate matter and could not be diffracted like light. However, in 1912, von Laue proposed that X-rays could be diffracted by the regular arrangement of atoms in a crystal lattice. He demonstrated this hypothesis by passing X-rays through a crystal of zinc sulfide, producing a series of diffraction patterns that revealed the crystal's internal structure. Von Laue's discovery paved the way for the development of X-ray crystallography, a powerful technique used to determine the three-dimensional structures of molecules and crystals. His work laid the foundation for the modern era of structural biology and materials science. Max von Laue continued to make significant contributions to physics throughout his career, including the development of the Bragg equation with his colleague William Henry Bragg. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1914, together with Bragg, for their work on X-ray diffraction and the analysis of crystal structures. Von Laue passed away on February 24, 1960, leaving behind a rich scientific legacy that continues to inspire and influence researchers in various fields of science.
