1836 Basque Carlist Evans Foreign Fort Gipuzkoa Hillside Lacy Legion Mount Region Cementerio

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the Memorial to Fallen English Soldiers, situated atop Mount Urgull in San Sebastian, Spain. The memorial, also known as Cementerio de Los Ingleses (Cemetery of the English), commemorates the brave English soldiers who fought and lost their lives during the First Carlist War in 1836. At that time, a British force of approximately 10,000 men, led by General De Lacy Evans, had gathered in San Sebastian to defend the city against the Carlists. The soldiers were part of the Spanish Foreign Legion, a military unit composed mainly of British volunteers. When the Spanish forces were pushed back, the English soldiers held their ground on Mount Urgull, preventing the enemy from taking the city. Sadly, the memorial today stands in a poor state of repair, a poignant reminder of the historical significance of this site. Mount Urgull, a rocky hillside overlooking the Bay of Biscay, offers a breathtaking backdrop to the memorial. The hill, which has been a strategic location since ancient times, is now a popular tourist destination, attracting visitors from around the world who seek to pay their respects to the fallen soldiers. The Basque region of Spain, where San Sebastian is located, has a rich history, and this memorial is an important part of that story. The First Carlist War, which lasted from 1833 to 1840, was a civil conflict that arose from the succession crisis following the death of King Ferdinand VII. The war saw the division of Spain into two factions: the Carlists, who supported the claim of Don Carlos to the throne, and the Liberals, who supported Queen Isabella II. This photograph, taken in the 1910s, offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back in time to an era of conflict and struggle, and reminding us of the sacrifices made by the brave soldiers who fought and died on the rocky hillside of Mount Urgull.
