EDITORS COMMENTS
Men at Yarrow Military Hospital, Broadstairs, Kent, UK, 1914: A poignant image capturing the spirit of camaraderie and resilience during wartime, this photograph shows a diverse group of men at Yarrow Military Hospital. The men, a mixture of both staff and patients, display a range of injuries with some wearing arm slings and bearing the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC) badge on their arms. Sir Alfred Yarrow, a renowned shipbuilder and philanthropist, had opened the home in approximately 1895 as a charitable institution. In late 1914, the Committee of Management generously offered the facility to military authorities to be used as a hospital, entirely staffed and funded by them. This arrangement continued until around August 1916 when the hospital was taken over by the Canadian military medical authorities. Today, the historic building stands as part of East Kent College in Broadstairs, Kent, serving as a reminder of the sacrifices made during wartime and the compassionate spirit of those who provided care and support to the wounded soldiers.
