The malt is drawn from the store-bins by a wonderful system of Archimedian screws...thence to the mill-room, where it passes between chilled-steel rollers and, a grist, is thoroughly mixed with water at a particular temperature by means of a mashing-machine. Falling into the mash-tun, the malt starch is converted into malt sugars. After standing, this malt extract, or wort as it is technically called, is drawn off into coppers. Date: 1909

EDITORS COMMENTS
1. Title: A Traditional Corner of the Mittings and Butlers Cape Hill Brewery's Mashing Room, Smethwick, West Midlands (1909) 2.. Step back in time to the early 1900s and experience the intricate process of traditional brewing at Mitchells and Butlers Cape Hill Brewery in Smethwick, West Midlands. This photograph offers a glimpse into the mashing room, where the transformation of malt into malt sugars, or wort, takes place. In the corner of the room, malt is drawn from the store-bins using a remarkable system of Archimedes screws. These screws, with their spiral design, efficiently transport the grain to the mill-room without damaging it. Once there, the malt passes between chilled-steel rollers, which grind the grain and create a grist - a mixture of malt and water. The grist is then transferred to the mashing-machine, where it is thoroughly mixed with water at a specific temperature. This crucial step converts the malt starch into malt sugars, creating the foundation for the brewing process. After standing, the resulting malt extract, or wort, is drawn off into coppers, where it will be further processed to create the final beer product. This photograph, taken in 1909, showcases the intricacy and precision of the brewing process during the industrial revolution. The scene is a testament to the rich history of brewing in the West Midlands and the dedication of the craftsmen who worked at the Mitchells and Butlers Cape Hill Brewery.
