1862 Armoured Confederates Destroyed Federal Frigate Hampton Merrimac Monitor Retreated Roads Vessels
EDITORS COMMENTS
The Battle of Hampton Roads, fought on March 8-9, 1862, was a pivotal moment in the American Civil War. This historic photograph captures the aftermath of the engagement between the Confederate armored frigate Merrimac and the Federal warship Monitor. The Merrimac, renamed Virginia after being refitted with iron armor, had caused havoc in the Hampton Roads harbor, destroying several Federal vessels before encountering the Monitor, the first US Navy armored warship. The innovative Monitor, with its revolutionary rotating turret mounting two 11-inch Dahlgren guns, proved to be an effective countermeasure against the Merrimac's armor. The two ships engaged in a fierce battle, resulting in no clear victor, as both sustained significant damage and were unable to continue effective combat. The Merrimac eventually retreated to Norfolk Navy Yard, marking the end of the Battle of Hampton Roads. This photograph, taken by an unknown photographer, offers a glimpse into the historic encounter between these iconic vessels, showcasing the technological advancements and military strategies employed during the American Civil War.
