EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite portrait captures the enigmatic beauty of Margaret of Parma, also known as Margaret of Austria or Margaret of Vargas (1522-1586), the illegitimate daughter of Holy Roman Emperor Charles V. Margaret rose to prominence in the imperial court as a trusted advisor and confidante to her father, who bestowed upon her the title of Duchess of Parma and Piacenza. In this image, Margaret is depicted in the prime of her life, radiantly dressed in the latest fashionable attire of the day. Her dark hair is styled in intricate braids and curls, framing a face that exudes an air of intelligence and sophistication. Her piercing gaze, fixed directly on the viewer, suggests a woman of great strength and determination. Margaret's relationship with her father was complex and multifaceted. While she played a crucial role in the governance of the Spanish Netherlands, she also served as a mediator between her father and her half-sister, Mary I of England, during their tumultuous negotiations. Her diplomatic skills and political acumen were highly regarded, and she was instrumental in securing peace between the Netherlands and England in 1554. Despite her many accomplishments, Margaret's personal life was marked by tragedy. She was married twice, both marriages ending in widowhood, and she outlived three of her four children. Her final years were spent in retirement in the convent of Essen, where she devoted herself to charitable works and spiritual contemplation. This portrait, created in 1586, serves as a poignant reminder of Margaret's remarkable life and enduring legacy as a powerful and influential figure in European history.
