EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph, Mrs E. Cunliffe Owen, a pioneering figure in the history of World War I, is depicted sitting in a bath chair with her husband and her son, who proudly holds his newly-granted commission as a lieutenant. The year is 1914, and the scene unfolds against the backdrop of an impending global conflict that would soon engulf Europe and the world. Mrs Cunliffe Owen is best known for her groundbreaking role as the founder of the 23rd (Service) Battalion, Royal Fusiliers, and the 24th (Service) Battalion, popularly known as the Sportsmens Battalions. These battalions differed from the more commonly known Pals Battalions, which drew their recruits primarily from specific geographical areas. Instead, the Sportsmens Battalions were composed predominantly of men from the sporting world. The formation of these battalions was an innovative response to the war's imminent outbreak, as many sportsmen, recognizing their duty to their country, sought to enlist together and serve alongside their comrades. Mrs Cunliffe Owen's vision and determination played a crucial role in bringing this idea to fruition, providing a unique opportunity for camaraderie and unity among soldiers who shared a common passion for sports. In this portrait, the warmth and love shared among the family members are palpable, as they gather together in a moment of pride and anticipation. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the human stories that lie at the heart of history, and the extraordinary role that individuals like Mrs Cunliffe Owen played in shaping the course of the First World War.
