EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print captures the aftermath of the Battle of Fredericksburg, a pivotal moment in the American Civil War that took place on December 11-15, 1863. The Battle of Fredericksburg, also known as the Battle for Harry's Hill or the Battle of Marye's Heights, was a significant Union defeat against the Confederate Army under the command of General Robert E. Lee. The map in the foreground provides a clear visual representation of the battlefield, with key locations labeled, including the Sunken Road, where the Union Army launched a failed assault on the Confederate lines, and Marye's Heights, where the Confederates held their ground. The battle took place along the Rappahannock River, with the Union Army attempting to cross the river and attack the Confederate forces positioned on the high ground. Despite outnumbering the Confederates, the Union Army suffered heavy losses, with estimates placing Union casualties at around 12,654 and Confederate casualties at around 5,300. The failure of the Union attack at Fredericksburg is often seen as a turning point in the war, as it marked the end of General Ambrose Burnside's tenure as commander of the Army of the Potomac and led to the appointment of General Joseph Hooker. The print also includes a detailed key, which provides information on the various units involved in the battle, as well as the locations of key terrain features. This print offers a valuable historical record of one of the most significant battles of the American Civil War and provides a fascinating glimpse into the strategies and tactics employed by both sides during this pivotal moment in American history.
