EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 82: Ibisbill, Ibidorhyncha struthersii, watercolor painting by Rajman Singh, from the collection of Brian Hodgson (1800-1894), a renowned naturalist and explorer of Nepal during the nineteenth century. This exquisite illustration showcases the distinctive anatomy of the Ibisbill (Ibidorhyncha struthersii), a wading bird native to the Himalayas and other parts of Asia. The long-legged, grey bird is named for its distinctive, curved, downward-pointing bill, which is well-adapted for probing the muddy riverbeds for food. The Ibisbill's belly is white, contrasting sharply with its grey back and neck. Its eyes are large and expressive, and its long, thin legs are perfectly suited for wading in shallow water. This watercolor painting, created in the 1800s, is a testament to the meticulous observation and artistic skill of Rajman Singh and the natural history collections of Brian Hodgson. The Charadriiformes order, to which the Ibisbill belongs, is a diverse group of birds that includes plovers, sandpipers, and avocets, among others. This illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of this intriguing bird species and the rich biodiversity of Asia during the nineteenth century.
