1692 Anglo Defeats Destroys Hogue Rooke Russel Tourville Vessels Barfleur Fleet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning print commemorates the historic Naval Battle of La Hogue, which took place on October 13, 1692, off the coasts of Barfleur and Tatihou in Normandy, France. The battle was a significant engagement of the Nine Years' War (1688-1697) between the Kingdoms of England, Scotland, and the Dutch Republic, and the Kingdom of France. At the helm of the British/Dutch fleet was Admiral Earl of Torbay, George Rooke, and Vice-Admiral Earl of Orkney, Earl of Berwick, Rupert of Palatine, John Benbow, and Prince Maurice of Nassau, with the Dutch admiral, Michiel de Ruyter, serving under Rooke. Facing them was the French fleet, led by Admiral de Tourville, who had assembled a formidable force of around 40 ships of the line. The battle began with a fierce engagement between the two fleets. The British/Dutch forces, with their superior tactics and coordination, managed to inflict significant damage on the French fleet. Rooke's strategic maneuvers, including the destruction of the French rear guard, proved crucial in the battle's outcome. By the end of the day, 15 French vessels had been destroyed or captured, and the remaining French ships retreated to port. This impressive print captures the intensity and scale of the battle, with the smoke from the burning ships billowing into the sky. The detailed depiction of the various ships and their pennants allows viewers to appreciate the naval power of the time and the skill of the commanders involved. The Battle of La Hogue was a turning point in the Nine Years' War, and its outcome helped secure the dominance of the Anglo-Dutch fleet in European waters.
