EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant image, captured by renowned photojournalist G.H. Davis for the Illustrated London News, depicts a tragic day in naval history during the early stages of World War I. The date is September 22, 1914, and the location is the North Sea. In this single frame, three British and Allied ships are shown, each having met their untimely end. The lead vessel, the Aboukir, lies aground and listing heavily to starboard, its hull torn open by the force of a German torpedo. The second ship, the Hogue, can be seen in the background, engulfed in smoke and flames, having attempted to render assistance to the Aboukir. Tragically, the Hogue also fell victim to the same enemy submarine, succumbing to the same deadly weapon. The third ship, the Cressy, is shown further in the distance, its midsection obliterated, having been struck amidships. The loss of these three ships marked a significant blow to the British and Allied forces, with a combined total of over 1,400 lives lost. This haunting image serves as a stark reminder of the brutal realities of war, and the human cost of conflict. The North Sea, once a symbol of maritime prowess and power, now bears witness to this tragic chapter in naval history.
