Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg, Russia - Avenue 25 October

Nevsky Prospekt in St. Petersburg, Russia. In 1918, the new Bolshevik government changed the name of the street to " Avenue of 25 October" (as used, interestingly, on this card), but the new name never caught the imagination of the locals. We have dated this card to 1924, the year St Petersburg became known as Leningrad. Gostiny Dvor can be seen on the left, St Petersburgs largest department store. It was one of the first department stores in the world -- building began in 1757 and took 28 years. By the 20th century it contained more than 170 shops. More recently it has been redeveloped as a fashionable shopping mall. The tall Duma building can be seen further back -- built in the late 18th century, this was the local political headquarters for the city, similar to a local council. Date: circa 1924

EDITORS COMMENTS
Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg, Russia: A Glimpse into the Past of Avenue 25 October This evocative photograph captures Nevsky Prospekt, St. Petersburg's most famous avenue, in the early 1920s. At this time, the new Bolshevik government had renamed the street "Avenue of 25 October," but the name never truly took hold among the locals. The avenue, which translates to "Nevsky Way" in English, has been a central artery of the city since the 18th century. In this image, we see several iconic landmarks that have shaped the history of St. Petersburg. On the left, the impressive Gostiny Dvor building can be seen. Constructed between 1757 and 1785, it was one of the world's first department stores, housing over 170 shops. More recently, it has been redeveloped as a fashionable shopping mall. Further back, the Duma building stands tall. Built in the late 18th century, this historic structure served as the local political headquarters for the city, similar to a local council. This photograph is dated to 1924, a pivotal year in St. Petersburg's history when it was known as Leningrad. The Bolsheviks had seized power in 1917, and the city underwent significant changes under the new communist regime. The renaming of Nevsky Prospekt is just one example of the many ways in which the city's identity was altered during this period. Despite the political upheaval, Nevsky Prospekt continued to be a bustling hub of activity, reflecting the resilience and adaptability of the city and its people.
