101st 2001 Airborne Funded Germans Gift Initiated Recognition Resistance Sint Veterans

EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant photograph captures the 101st US Airborne Memorial in the quaint Dutch town of Sint Oedenrode. The memorial was initiated and funded by veterans of the 101st Airborne Division as a token of gratitude for the Dutch resistance against the Germans during World War II and the vital support they received from the local population. The idea for the memorial was spearheaded by veteran John Seney and designed by Frans Alkemade, Andre van Bergeyk, and Trudy Peters-Broos. Unveiled on September 21, 1994, by Lieutenant-General Harry Kinnard, who in 1944 commanded the 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment that landed in an unexpected location, almost on top of Castle Heeswijk, the monument stands as a symbol of appreciation and camaraderie between the American and Dutch people. The inscription on the memorial reads, "Dedicated to the Dutch people in grateful appreciation." The bronze relief scenes surrounding the monument depict the historic landings, immortalizing the bravery and resilience of both the 101st Airborne Division and the people of Sint Oedenrode.
