EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print depicts the 11th Armoured Division Memorial, located in the quaint Dutch village of Stiphout. The memorial stands as a testament to the bravery and sacrifices made during the pivotal World War II operation known as Market Garden. The Market Garden Operation, which took place in September 1944, involved a daring armoured attack by British and American forces along a narrow corridor stretching from Belgium into Holland. The primary objective was to capture key bridges over several rivers and expand the Allied front lines, ultimately shortening the war. The 11th Armoured Division, although not directly involved in the assault, played a crucial role in the operation. Their mission was to prevent enemy attacks on the corridor from the eastern flank, ensuring the success of the Market Garden mission. The major obstacles in the operation were not only the formidable German forces but also the various rivers that needed to be crossed. In preparation for the ground forces, airborne troops were dropped in advance to secure the bridgeheads. This poignant memorial, dedicated to the 11th Armoured Division, serves as a reminder of the significant role they played in the Battle of the Bulge and the eventual liberation of the Netherlands. The image captures the peaceful serenity of the village, a stark contrast to the intense and historic events that unfolded in this very location over six decades ago. This photograph, taken in the year 2000, encapsulates the rich history and the enduring legacy of the 11th Armoured Division's involvement in the Market Garden Operation.
