EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the moment during the 4th Gordon Bennett International Automobile Race, held on July 2, 1903, when the leading vehicle, the Napier Stocks car driven by British racer Charles Jarrott, stopped at the scales in Naas, Ireland. The Gordon Bennett Trophy was an annual long-distance endurance race for early automobiles, established in 1900 by the Automobile Club of France. Jarrott's Napier Stocks, a powerful and innovative vehicle, had been dominating the race from the start, leaving competitors in its dust. However, as the race progressed, Jarrott encountered several challenges, including a flat tire and a fuel issue. Despite these setbacks, he continued to push his vehicle to its limits, maintaining his lead. As the rules of the race required all competitors to stop at the designated weigh stations to ensure fairness, Jarrott pulled over to the scales at Naas. The photograph shows the Napier Stocks being weighed, with Jarrott standing nearby, a determined look on his face. Despite his lead, Jarrott ultimately decided to withdraw from the race, citing mechanical issues as the reason. The photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the early days of automobile racing, when drivers faced numerous challenges and relied on their skill, determination, and mechanical knowledge to navigate long distances and harsh conditions. The Napier Stocks car, with its powerful engine and innovative design, remains an iconic symbol of the era, and this photograph offers a unique glimpse into the history of motor sports.
