EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the historic moment when Henri Farman, an Anglo-French aviator, achieved a record-breaking flight in his biplane at the Aéroclub de France airfield in Paris, on January 1908. Farman, who was born in 1874, had already made a name for himself in the world of aviation by successfully completing several short flights in open-air biplanes. But this time, he aimed to win the Deutsch-Archdeacon prize of 50,000 francs, which was offered to the first aviator who could fly a kilometre in a closed circuit without touching the ground and land safely for a minimum of one minute and 28 seconds. With determination and skill, Farman took off in his biplane and soared through the crisp winter air, leaving a trail of smoke behind him. The crowd that had gathered at the airfield watched in awe as he completed several laps around the circuit, maintaining a steady altitude and demonstrating remarkable control over his aircraft. Finally, after an exhilarating flight, Farman touched down smoothly on the runway, triumphantly completing the challenge and winning the coveted prize. This photograph is a testament to Farman's groundbreaking achievement in the early days of aviation, a time when the possibilities of flight were just beginning to be explored. The image captures the excitement and innovation of the era, as well as the daring spirit of the pioneering aviators who pushed the boundaries of what was thought possible.
