EDITORS COMMENTS
This hand-colored engraving, created by Fournier after an illustration by Edouard Travies, showcases two intriguing bird species native to Africa: the African Emerald Cuckoo (Chrysococcyx cupreus) and the Red-billed Malkoha (Zanclostomus javanicus). The African Emerald Cuckoo, also known as the Copper-green Cuckoo or Chrysogaster, is a small cuckoo with iridescent green plumage and a distinctive crest. This cuckoo is a brood parasite, laying its eggs in the nests of other bird species, allowing the young cuckoo to be raised by the foster parents. The Red-billed Malkoha, also known as the Red-billed Coua or Phaenicophaeus javanicus, is a medium-sized bird with distinctive red bills and legs, black and white plumage, and a long, pointed tail. This bird is a resident of forests and savannas across Central and West Africa. The Red-billed Malkoha is an omnivorous species, feeding on a variety of fruits, seeds, and insects. This beautiful engraving is taken from Charles d'Orbigny's Dictionnaire Universel d'Histoire Naturelle (Dictionary of Natural History), published in Paris in 1849. The Dictionnaire Universel was a comprehensive work on natural history, featuring detailed illustrations and descriptions of a wide range of plants and animals from around the world. This particular engraving showcases the meticulous attention to detail and artistic skill of the time, making it a valuable addition to any collection of natural history or ornithology.
