This stunning handcoloured copperplate stipple engraving depicts Agelaea pentagyna, also known as Connarus pentagynus, Connarus a cinq styles, or Pavonazza, a vibrant and intriguing plant in the family Connaraceae. The illustration is taken from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali, or Dictionary of Natural Science, published in Florence, Italy, in 1837. Agelaea pentagyna, native to Central and South America, is characterized by its distinctive violet-colored wood, which is reminiscent of sorrel, wood violet, or oxalis. The plant produces small, violacea flowers and edible, oval-shaped fruits. The illustration was engraved by Victoire Plee, under the direction of the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840). Turpin is considered one of the greatest botanical illustrators of the 19th century, known for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic skill. The engraving was published by Batelli e Figli.
